12 Illegal Street Drugs: Krokodil, Molly, Flakka, and More

Amphetamines and methylphenidate pass into breast milk, but the levels may not be high enough to pose a major hazard to most infants, although this is as yet unclear. “Ecstasy” and closely related products (amphetamines) are concentrated also in human milk. In pregnancy the amphetamine intoxication may present as eclampsia. The use of recreational drugs has long been recognized as a potential health problem which needs to be tackled (Aguirre-Molina & Gorman, 1996). The most commonly used drugs are alcohol and tobacco, however, here we consider what are usually referred to as psychoactive drugs (i.e., a drug that alters mood or behavior). Most of these drugs have medical uses as well as being used recreationally.

Health Psychology

These changes can remain long after you stop using the drug. Despite the name, these are not bath products such as Epsom salts. Substituted cathinones can be eaten, snorted, inhaled or injected and are highly addictive. These drugs can cause severe intoxication, which results in dangerous health effects or even death.

For example, heroin is highly addictive by itself—your body and mind will continuously long for it. Admittedly, it’s challenging to get out of drug addiction without professional intervention. Recreational drugs—stimulants in particular—can also cause cardiac arrhythmia or irregular heart rate.

PERINATAL SUBSTANCE USE

It makes the heart beat faster and it can sometimes cause very high blood pressure or heart attacks. It can cause mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety and panic disorder. Cocaine can become very addictive, and people who use it regularly crave more.

Stimulants

It’s common for a person to relapse, but relapse doesn’t mean that treatment doesn’t work. As with other chronic health conditions, treatment should be ongoing and should be adjusted based on how the patient responds. Treatment plans need to be reviewed often and modified to fit the patient’s changing needs.

In the UK, screening programs have been set up for various diseases including anemia (Ashworth, 1963), diabetes (Redhead, 1960), bronchitis (Gregg, 1966), cervical cancer (Freeling, 1965), and breast cancer (Forrest, 1986). Considering breast cancer, it has been estimated that breast screening programs which include mammograms can reduce breast cancer mortality by up to 40% among women aged 50 and over (Strax, 1984). However, participation rates in breast screening programs show great variability across different countries, ranging from 25% to 89% (Vernon, Laville, & Jackson, 1990). Participation tends to be negatively related to age and positively related to education level and socioeconomic status (Vernon et al., 1990).

LSD is a semisynthetic preparation of d-lysergic acid and is the most powerful psychotropic agent known that produces opposing actions of powerful central stimulation with slight depression. LSD produces significant pyramidal and extrapyramidal effects as consequence of interaction with central 5-hydroxytryptamine (serotonin) receptors. Adverse reactions occur within minutes after ingestion; sympathetic stimulation results in mydriasis, hyperthermia, piloerection, tachycardia, hyperglycemia, and hypertension.

Physical addiction appears to occur when repeated use of a drug changes the way your brain feels pleasure. The addicting drug causes physical changes to some nerve cells (neurons) in your brain. Neurons use chemicals called neurotransmitters to communicate.

Routes of administration

These drugs are not all in the same category, but they share some similar effects and dangers, including long-term harmful effects. Illegal stimulants include addictive substances like cocaine and methamphetamine. Party drugs that can also qualify as hallucinogens, like ecstasy (MDMA), are also illegal. Inhalants are gases, aerosols, or solvents that are breathed in and absorbed through the lungs. A small number of recreational inhalant drugs are pharmaceutical products that are used illicitly, such as anesthetics (ether and nitrous oxide)101 and volatile anti-angina drugs (alkyl nitrites, more commonly known as “poppers”). People can do dangerous things when they feel more confident than they should.

Early, proactive involvement of social services is essential. It may be done by family and friends in consultation with a health care provider or mental health professional such as a licensed alcohol and drug counselor, or directed by an intervention professional. It involves family and friends and sometimes co-workers, clergy or others who care about the person struggling with addiction. Recreational drugs can be addictive, whether it’s due to your intake habits or the nature of the drug itself.

The use of volatile substances for the euphoric effect has been practiced since ancient times. Some of these can be found in virtually every household. The most common technique of administration involves spraying or soaking a rag, placing it over the face, and inhaling to the point of euphoria or unconsciousness.
