Oregon has seen the biggest increase (41.5%) in overdose deaths over the last statistically available 12 months. Opioid overdoses are the most common cause of drug-related deaths, but even cannabis (marijuana) has resulted in preventable deaths. There are 250 drugs classified as Schedule I. Some examples of Schedule I drugs include ecstacy, heroin, synthetic heroin, LSD, marijuana, and peyote. In 2017, the cost of drug abuse in the US was nearly $272 billion, taking into account crime, healthcare needs, lost work productivity and other impacts on society. Drug abuse and misuse of prescription drugs is generally more prevalent in males than in females. Statistics indicate that some demographics and communities face elevated risks of drug abuse and drug disorders.
